Police in Kisumu County on Thursday arrested 27 youth armed with crude weapons, and foiled their attempt to disrupt a political campaign meeting organized by Kisumu Senate candidate, Fred Outa.
Nyando OCPD, Amin Mohammed told the media that the youth, who were travelling in a pick up from Muhoroni sub-county had intended to disrupt the launching of a manifesto by the aspirant.
I immediately alerted my officers who intercepted the vehicle on the Kisumu- Nairobi highway, before they arrived at Rabour market, the venue of the meeting, he said.
Mohammed said upon searching the vehicle, they recovered three pangas and 2 rolls of bhang. A pick up ferrying the youth was also impounded by police.
We have put them in custody at Ahero police station and they will appear in court on Friday, he said.
The OCPD said the youth did not confirm or deny whether they had been hired by someone.
The launch was attended by Mombasa governor, Ali Hassan Joho, Siaya Senator James Orengo among other ODM luminaries.
In a rejoinder, Kisumu County Commissioner, Maalim Mohammed warned that the government will deal firmly with anybody out to disturb the peace. We commend members of the public who provided information about the motor vehicle ferrying the youth and their intention, said Maalim.
There has been fallout among members of ODM party in Nyanza region following the allegedly flawed party nominations.
In the recent primaries, Kisumu Governor Jack Ranguma, who was defending the seat was floored by the current Kisumu Senator Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, who is allied to current Nyando MP, Fred Outa, now seeking the senate seat.
Earlier, a group allied to Ranguma claimed that their opponents intended to hire goons with T-shirts bearing the name of the governor to disrupt the meeting, and then blame it on him.
