Residents of Ithareini village, Kirinyaga County welcomed the New Year in shock and disbelief after they found the body of a young woman dangling from a guava tree within their family compound.
The deceased identified as Caro Nyaga, 22, is feared to have committed suicide following an alleged bitter domestic quarrel with her mother on Thursday.
She was reported to have woken up as usual, milked their cow and delivered the milk to a nearby collection center before buying some wheat flour for the family.
“But on coming back home, Caro dumped the flour and the milk can by the door and ran quickly towards the tree where she hanged herself and was already dead when the witness raised an alarm,” said a neighbor who did not wish to be identified.
It was alleged that the daughter who completed her form four in 2014 had a disagreement with her mother the previous day leading to the new year incident.
At the scene of the incident, police recovered her mobile phone handset which they took away and also impounded that of her mother.
Police from the Scenes of Crime said they were informed by the mother that the girl had sent her a text message before taking away her life.
The details of the alleged sensitive message could however not be released to the press since investigations into the matter had just commenced.
Area residents said the incident had spoilt the new year celebrations given it was the same home where on June 26 last year the family head Nyaga Kiumia was allegedly attacked by his wife and her other daughter sustaining serious injuries.
Kiumia, a former military officer had to be hospitalized for several weeks while the wife and the daughter were arrested and charged in court but the matter was later withdrawn and resolved amicably at home.
