The Siaya Women representative, Dr. Christine Ombaka has decried the rising cases of gender based violence and called for stiff penalties against the perpetrators.
Dr. Ombaka said unless the perpetrators were brought to book, the future of families and eventually the nation was bleak as generations to come will not respect individual rights and the law of the land.
The legislator was speaking on Saturday at Sagam community hospital in Gem Sub County during a talk on reproductive health for girls.
She said it was high time the police and other law enforcement agencies got serious about curbing gender based violence and child right violation.
Dr. Ombaka further decried the high number of forced marriages amongst teenage girls who get pregnant while still young.
The society is still harsh on such girls, making some of them to opt for abortion for fear of becoming a laughing stock in the society, lamented the law maker.
She called on young girls to take care of themselves and avoid falling prey on sex pests who prey on them.
You must preserve your sexual dignity and focus on education and building your future, she advised.
