Woman’s decomposing body found in thicket

Decomposing body of a 25 year old woman who had been reported missing was over weekend recovered in a thicket in Kongoni village, Likuyani sub Sub County, Kakamega County.

According to Likuyani police boss Meshack Kemboi Kiptum the mutilated body of the woman was discovered by a retired chief, Peter Likwilu, 79, who was grazing his cows.

He said that a foul smell from the thicket attracted the old man’s curiosity and made him search around only to stumble on the decomposing body.

Led by Matunda OCS Raphael Mutiso, police visited the scene and discovered the body had been mutilated with some parts missing and burned.

The body had serious burns with some parts including eyes, ears, a leg and hand missing, said Kiptum

He added that it was suspected that the woman was killed elsewhere before her body was dumped in the thicket and set alight.

He said Likwilu’s neighbours who reached the scene could identify the body to be of Juliana Mukangala Mwanda and her family had reported her disappearance on 18th Feb 2018.

Likuyani Sub County council of elders’ secretary Mr. Cyprian Shisanya said the deceased was his daughter-in-law and it was a coincidence that the body was found by Mzee Likwilu who is the council’s chairman.

Husband to the deceased, John Shisanya said that his wife woke up at 2 am claiming to be so thirsty and walked to the kitchen to drink water but never returned to bed.

My wife went to drink water in the kitchen around 2am, I heard her open the kitchen door but what happened next I cannot tell and after waiting for about five minutes I went to check on her but she was nowhere to be seen, he said.

He informed relatives about her disappearance and they all joined in a search for her everywhere including mortuaries and hospitals but all in vain, he said, adding that she was in a skin tight only on the fateful night.

The Police took the body to Kitale Hospital mortuary for postmortem and launched investigations into the murder.

The incident follows a similar one where a 34-year-old woman (Catherine Kendi) was also killed and her body burnt before being dumped in a cave near Kipsangui River in the neighbouring Sango sub location about three weeks ago.
