A woman was on Thursday caught shoplifting cooking oil from Cleanshelf Supermarket in Limuru town.
Staff said they saw Violet Chuka steal two bottles of Elianto cooking oil, conceal them with a scarf and leave the shop “briskly as if she didn’t find the items she wanted to buy”.
“The workers raised the alarm and supermarket guards and APs on patrol stopped, searched and detained the woman, after she was found with the oil,” Nancy Njeri, a customer, said.
Chuka was released after relatives paid a Sh20,000 ‘fine’ imposed by the supermarket.
Workers said the supermarket “forgives” shoplifters if they pay 10 time the price of the stolen item.
Each bottle of oil cost Sh1,000.
The Star’s could not get a comment from the supermarket management, as the officials were said to be in a meeting out of town.
