An illicit brew dealer in Nandi County who was found in possession of 310 litres of different types of local brews has been slapped with Sh.205, 000 fines as penalty by a Kapsabet Court.
The accused Beatrice Njenga who owned up to the offense of dealing with alcoholic drinks without a license will have to pay up the fine or in default serve two years and five months in jail.
She pleaded guilty to two counts of being found in possession of 300 litres of Kangara and another ten litres of chang’aa at Kapsasur village in Nandi County on Friday last week.
In mitigation the accused told Kapsabet Senior Resident Magistrate Maureen Cherono she is sickly and depends on the illicit brew trade to provide for her family.
She could not immediately raise the money for the fines and was escorted to begin her term in jail.
The sale and consumption of illicit brews in Nandi County is rampant and the county administration has launched a crackdown to eradicate the thriving trade by enforcing the alcoholic drinks control act.
