We Won’t Let Civil Staff Run Bars – Irungu

THE Laikipia county will not issue bar licences to public officers, Governor Joshua Irungu has said.

Donating energy-saving stoves in Segera ward on Friday, he said village committees have been formed to ensure illicit liqour does not resurface.

The governor said licensing of alcohol outlets is now under county governments and his administration will ensure a reduction in the number of bars.

“All licences to operate bars were cancelled and the operators have to apply afresh in two months,” Irungu said.

“No application from a public servant, including me, will be accepted.”

The governor said issuing licences will also be pegged to the wishes of residents.

Laikipia Central deputy county commissioner Titus Kilonzi said everyone should be involved in the war on alcoholism.

He urged the residents to look out for illicit drink brewers.
