Residents of Malindi and Magarini sub counties have been urged to store enough water as the county prepares for the worst drought.
Speaking to Kenya News Agency in his office on Tuesday, Malindi Water and Sewerage Company (MAWASCO) Managing Director, Gerald Mwambire said water supply from the Baricho water works was diminishing due to the prevailing harsh climatic conditions.
We expect to receive little amount of water from Baricho and that is why we are urging residents to have water storage tanks since the supply will be rationed, he said.
Mwambire also said the low supply of water had also been affected by siltation of the pumps at the water intake which made the twenty boreholes in Baricho water source produce contaminated water hence a need for their cleaning.
We are going to ration the water supply so that all our clients get water as well as sensitize them about the challenges we are facing as far as water supply is concerned, Mwambire added.
However, Mwambire said the Company had no other options but to rely on water supply from Baricho and efforts to sink boreholes in Malindi were not successful as they produced saline water, unfit for human consumption.
He warned residents against digging boreholes in their homes without involving the company so that they do not end up getting toxic water.
