University student commits suicide at a Kericho hotel

A student from Cooperative University, Nairobi committed suicide at a hotel room in Kapsoit trading centre, Kericho County on Thursday after informing a family member.

Confirming the incident on phone, Belgut Sub-County OCPD, Philip Okello said the deceased identified as Eric Kiprotich Bowen, 21, killed himself by taking a suspected poisonous substance.

According to Okello, the deceased had retired to his room at Ken Park hotel after partying with friends at the trading centre.

He revealed that the deceased had actually called a family member informing him that he was on the verge of committing suicide, prompting the relative to alert the owner of the establishment, who knocked on the student’s room the following day but failed to get any response.

Police officers at Kapsoit police post were alerted and on arrival at the lodging at around 10am, they found the student dead with an empty bottle of the suspected poisonous substance near his bed.

The body was moved to Kericho County referral hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination while the said poisonous substance was taken to government chemist for analysis.

The OCPD said the type of poison will be confirmed after the analysis.
