Two notorious thugs were Thursday gunned down by police after an ambush in their hideout at Limanet quarry in the outskirts of Narok town.
During the operation, one suspect was arrested and three accomplices, one armed with a G3 riffle escaped.
The five thugs are linked to a series of robberies in major trading centers in Narok town and have been on the police radar for the last one month.
According to area OCPD Joseph Kisombe, the police have been trailing the gang for a period of time as they have been linked with the killing of a trader in Duka Moja trading center in Narok East last week where they made away with over Sh400,000.
For the last one month there have been rampant cases of robberies on businesses. We have been tracking them and when we got a tip off from members of the public we laid an ambush and fatally shot two dead after they exchanged fire with our officers, said Kisombe.
He said during the process two home-made guns were recovered from the deceased while two suspects vanished into the nearby thickets.
A spot check on the hideout in the caves in the abandoned quarry found the ‘home’ of the thugs with several rolls of bhang and personal effects such as blankets.
We also recovered rolls of cannabis sativa indicating that these thugs also doubled as narcotic peddlers. We are doing well and from the valuable information from the public we are confident that we shall get hold of the three others who are still at large, said the OCPD.
Kisombe also raised concern over a missing G3 riffle which was stolen from Sagutiek AP post in Narok East suspected to have been used by thugs to terrorize locals.
The incident comes barely weeks after two suspected robbers were shot dead by police at Total area in a botched attempt to break into a supermarket on Narok-Bomet road while armed with crude weapons.
