Two police officers and a civilian were shot dead on Saturday night at Lokichar in Turkana South Sub County during a shootout that ensued while they were pursuing a lorry suspected to have been transporting stolen sugar.
The civilian is said to have been in the lorry and was shot by police as were returning fire from the suspects.
The Turkana County Police Commander (CPC), Ronald Opili said another police officer sustained gunshot injuries on his hand but he is now in a stable condition.
Three police officers were pursuing the lorry that was suspected to have been transporting 10 bags of sugar that was stolen in Lokichar the previous day. They gave chase but when the lorry stopped, the occupants fired at the officers killing two of them, said Opili.
The police boss said the driver of the lorry escaped, adding that police will investigate to establish if the sugar was that which had been reported as stolen.
