Two men died after fire razed down their house at Kisumu Ndogo Slum, in Athi River town on Saturday night.
The Mavoko Chief, Nzau Komo who addressed the press on Sunday, said Vincent Baraza and Gerald Oluoch were sleeping in their rented mabati house when the 1.30am fire broke out.
Four single houses got completely consumed by fire since the residents’ efforts to put it out were futile. The cause of the fire was not immediately established he said.
According to a resident, Josephene Wambua, the deceased were workers of Athi River-based Kifaru Unga Limited.
Wambua lamented the slow response by the Machakos County Fire Services, arguing that the deaths and enormous loss of property could have been averted.
She regretted that the residents were forced to demolish the affected houses to prevent the fire from spreading to other structures.
We wonder why Mavoko Sub-County fire engine cannot be fixed to handle emergencies, we called for the fire brigade services but we were told there is no functional engine. For how long will we live like this? paused Wambua.
Wambua disclosed that the duo who did not live with their families shared a single mattress that was spread on the floor of the single-roomed house.
The remains of the departed were moved to Nairobi’s City Mortuary awaiting identification and burial arrangements
