Three suspects were on Wednesday shot dead by police at a house in Kanyagia village in Kieni West, Nyeri County.
An Ak47 rifle believed to have been used to kill Kamakwa location Chief Peter Kimiti was recovered from the criminals.
Speaking to media at the scene, Central Regional Commissioner (CRC), Wilson Njega said nine rounds of ammunition were also recovered during the shoot-out.
He said that since Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Fred Matiang’i issued a directive for an operation to weed out thugs in the region, 12 suspected criminals have been gunned down while eight suspects have been arrested and arraigned in court.
He said over the operation period so far, six illegal pistols, two homemade guns and two AK47s have been recovered.
Njega said the robbers were believed to have been planning to commit a robbery in Nyeri town but police received a tip-off from members of the public and acted immediately.
We are going to wipe out all criminals in the area, said Njega and urged those who wish to surrender fire arms in their possession to do so to Police stations in the region.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Nyeri Provincial General Hospital mortuary.
