Three nursery school girls died after they were swept by flood waters as they crossed Kiruri River in Mbeere South Sub County Tuesday.
The girls who attend Karura primary school were in a group of five heading home from school when they attempted to cross the seasonal river which had swollen after the ongoing rains.
According to Festus Kariuki, the chairman of a local nyumba kumi initiative, heavy rains were experienced in the area for a short period at around 3pm when the children were heading home from school.
He said their attempt to cross the fast rolling river were futile as they were swept downstream.
Two of the girls were rescued by members of the public and were taken to hospital and discharged while the three were found a few meters away trapped in trees before they were removed to the Embu Level 5 Hospital mortuary.
Kiambere MCA Lenny Mwaniki who represents the area, told teachers not to release pupils to go home during downpours saying this risked the lives of the children who are struggling to reach home.
Parents and teachers should be careful this rainy season to ensure that pupils are protected if not accompanied?
How do you release pupils to go home in the rain? Parents too should escort their children to school and collect them when they suspect that it may rain to avoid such calamities, said the MCA.
