The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has cleared three candidates for the North Ugenya ward by-election in Siaya county.
The mini-poll will be held on August 17.
The seat fell vacant after the death of Benson Onyango on March 12.
Returning officer Esborne Baraza said the IEBC has cleared JAP candidate Steve Mwanga, Shabban Omar of ODM and Kanu’s Lazarus Osendo.
“I am pleased to announce that the candidate’s nomination papers were delivered on Monday and yesterday,” he said.
Baraza said official campaigns started yesterday until August 15.
“The ward has 9,536 registered voters spread across 19 polling stations,” he said.
Speaking during the closure of presentation of nomination papers on Tuesday, Baraza said campaigns in churches and funerals have been banned.
He said candidates who violate the regulations will be disqualified.
Mwanga addressed a rally at Sega centre after presenting his nomination papers.
He said he left ODM for JAP following “the brazen rigging in of Omar by unnamed ODM politicians”.
Mwanga said he will give JAP its first MCA in Nyanza.
He was accompanied by JAP national officials David Murathe (vice chairman), Caleb Kositany (deputy secretary general) and Pamela Mutua (deputy organising secretary).
Nyanza JAP coordinator Yusuf Ooro was present.
Murathe said Kenyans should not divide the country along tribal lines.
