Technical institutions get Carbon Dioxide coolers

Five training institutions have been supplied with modern ozone climate friendly refrigeration to be used for training purposes.

The institutions, which include Nairobi Technical Training Institution (NTTI), National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), Technical University of Kenya (TUK) and Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) were offered the refrigerators on the basis that they train technicians.

Briefing the press Tuesday in Nairobi, Ministry of Environment and Forestry Principal Secretary Charles Sunkuli said that the equipment were Ozone and climate friendly using carbon dioxide as a cooling refrigerant.

Since this is what the Management, Economic and Finance (ME and F) study unit index has been doing to assist training institutions build capacity, I urge these institutions to utilize the equipment properly, said Sunkuli.

He also said that the country currently uses substances such as Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) that contribute to global warming and is now shifting to natural refrigerants such as carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and ammonia.

Carbon dioxide is one of the natural refrigerants being adopted to replace Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) and substances with negative impact on climate, added Sunkuli.

TUK representative Professor John Ogur said that the refrigerators, which reduce negative impact to the environment are cheaper compared to others.

A carbon dioxide cylinder costs at around 700 shillings, this is a quarter of the price of the previous refrigerators, said Ogur.
