Technical Institutes Get Training Equipment

More than 134 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions will receive Ks6.4 billion from the Chinese government to acquire modern machinery for use by staff and students.

Under the GOK China TVET programme, the new machinery will help the institutions to offer quality training to the members of staff and students.

According to the Project officer at state department of vocational and technical training Mr. Francis Mungai the Chinese government under the partnership had delivered manual and electronic machines to the mechanical engineering department to at least 28 institutions in the country.

He added that more machines were expected for distribution to 20 more technical institutions countrywide to ensure that technical students in all counties were imparted with the latest skills in the job market.

. The programme is aimed at fulfilling the governments’ mandate of promoting technical education in the country as enshrined in the vision 2030 and in other development agenda, he said

Mungai made the remarks at P.C. Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute in Nairobi after handing over equipment and machineries for training worth at least Ksh 130 million to the institute.

He said the Project was geared towards the establishment of centres of excellence and innovations with a view to produce competent graduates who meet the demands of the local labour market.

P.C. Kinyanjui Technical Training Institute Principal Sammy Waititu said the equipment’s will help develop and enhance the skills of the trainees majority of whom will be absorbed in the local market to promote economic growth.

He said the TVET institutions have over the last decade relied on government and donor facilitation to open up and diversify training opportunities to students taking technical courses to improve the quality of technicians in the job market.

He added that TVET institutes which initially attracted fewer school leavers due misguided perceptions from the members of public had gradually earned a place in the socioeconomic sphere after the industry captains acknowledged their contribution.

Since 1979 when the institution was started. the enrollment had grown tremendously especially with students taking courses such as mechanical engineering, applied sciences and electrical engineering and in order to attract more we do carry roadshows and induction days in areas such as Kawangware, Satellite and Kibera, Waititu said.

The campaign activities Waititu added have impacted positively as more youth have agreed to join the institution and abandon societal ills such as illicit brew consumption and prostitution.

We have instituted receptive measures in order to encourage more to join the institution. For example, concessionary ways of paying fees where parents who don’t have money can still arrange with the institutions of how best they can raise the fees in installments to minimize the burden.

We do not turn away any students, and in order to improve enrollment, we allow them to come in with their parents and agree on mode of payment to ensure that qualified students are not left out of the courses, he said.

The Principal added that the institution was also helping needy students apply and access HELB funds as most students at TVET were yet to fully exploit the loans facilities.

The Government is giving HELB facilities to almost all the TVET students applicants with the highest amount of Ksh 42,000 as fees charged at the facilities ammounts to less than Ksh 48,000 per year leaving parents with the task of topping up the Ksh 6,000 balance.

He confirmed th at the institute was also running short term training programmes for technicians already in the labour market to upscale their skills to required standards especially those in the construction and building industry, Jua kali artisans and mechanics who do not have formal education.

Waititu said the institute was in partnership with organizations such as Toyota, GIZ and DT Dobie to offer internship openings to students at the facility to give learners the needed industrial attachment and the development of the best practices in related sectors.

The Deputy Principal of the institute Ken Njoroge said the institute has massively transitioned since the government started to revamp the technical institutes in their country.

Njoroge who is an alumni of the institute says the Government’s renewed attention to the technical institutes was paying off as most school leavers who had almost lost hope were trained and working inthe industrial sectors of the economy.

Principal Waititu said the institute is ISO certified (ISO 9001:2015 certification) has come in handy in their development as it has given the institution an opportunity expected to enrich the establishment visibility and reception in the labour market.

By being ISO certified we have achieved numerous benefits such as standardization of procedures and improvement of working processes, Waititu added.
