The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) will conduct a mass registration exercise for persons with disabilities in Tana River Sub County in the next two weeks.
The exercise will be conducted in all locations in the sub county starting with Wayu in Galole division on May 29, 2017, the chairman of Association of Persons with Disabilities, Tana River County, Mr. Said Babwoya said.
Addressing reporters at the Tana River County Information Office in Hola Town on Wednesday, Mr. Babwoya called on all persons with various forms of disabilities to avail themselves for the exercise.
He was flanked by Mr. Mohamed Mahmoud, a disabilities service officer at the NCPWD office in Hola town.
Mr. Babwoya said the council was seeking to get data on persons with disabilities with a view to serving them better.
I particularly urge parents of children with disabilities to avail their children to nearby health facilities where officers from the national office will visit and assess and register those who will be confirmed to have disabilities.
Mr. Babwoya, said registering with the council would open opportunities for persons with disabilities such as being considered for cash transfer programmes, scholarships and provision of business and mobility kits among others.
Those registered with the council will also benefit from tax relief as well as cash transfers and scholarships among other services, he said.
He said a similar exercise was conducted in Tana North Sub County in 2015 and Tana Delta Sub County in 2016.
The chairman called on Kenyans to change their attitudes towards persons with disabilities but instead help them achieve their potential.
