Suspect jumps from first floor of a Malindi Court

Police in Malindi were forced to rush a man to hospital who sustained injuries after he attempted to escape by jumping from the first floor of the three floor Malindi Law court building while handcuffed.

Joseph Karisa had just appeared before Principal Magistrate (PM), Ms. Silvia Wewa charged with handling a stolen television, camera, handbags and bed covers.

The court yard was treated to drama when Karisa refused to be taken to the dock for plea taking on the offences, which included preparation to commit felony.

KNA has established that the accused was arrested on Monday and the prosecution had sought for more time to complete investigations that could lead to arrest of his accomplices in Kisumu Ndogo estate of Malindi town.

Police officers guarding suspects also had a rough time to tame the accused who seemed volatile leading to a chase on the stairs after he come from the courtroom.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, an eye witness Athman Rashid who had attended court, urged the judiciary to beef up security in court to avoid a repeat of such incidences in the future.

He is very lucky to be alive and he should really thank God although he has now put himself into more trouble, he said, adding that such attempts are common with those facing capital offences.
