SUDANESE WATER RESOURCES MINISTER ATTENDING NILE DAY CELEBRATIONS IN KENYA

Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation and Electricity Muataz Musa left for Kenya at the head of a Sudanese delegation participating in the Regional Celebration of Nile Day in the western Kenyan county of Vihiga on Monday.

The states of the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI) celebrate every year at the regional and national levels the anniversary of launching the NBI in 1999 by the Council of Water Ministers in the Nile Basin countries, a mechanism for technical co-operation among the countries.

The celebration coincides with other meetings, including those of the donors and strategic dialogue partners and the World Bank’s Water Co-operation Programme to discuss some important issues such as sustainability and continuity of the initiative as well as settlement of the contributions of the states to the NBI.

Nine of the Nile Basin countries established the initiative in 1999, with the aims of realizing a joint vision of “Sustainable Socio-economic Development” through the fair usage of the joint water resources of the River Nile
