Students charged with arson

Seven students from St. Peter’s Marakwet Boys High School were granted a sh.100,000 bail with a surety of the same amount or a cash bail of sh.20,000 each after they were charged with attempted arson and malicious damage to school property.

The seven were charged that on the night of September 26 ,2018, they willfully and unlawfully attempted to set fire to the St. Columbus dormitory worth sh.2.8 million property of St. Peter’s Marakwet boys high school.

They also faced a second count that on the same date they willfully and unlawfully damaged 15 matresses and 8 blankets valued at sh.50,000 property of St. Peter’s Marakwet boys high school.

The seven all aged 17 years appeared before Iten Senior Principal Magistrate, Hezron Nyaberi will be remanded at the Eldoret juvenile home if they fail to raise the bail.

The students through their lawyer a Mr. Kipchumba prayed to the court to be admitted on reasonable bond terms and to have the defence be supplied with witness statements.

The prosecutor Lucas Tanui said the prosecution was not opposed to the subject being released on bond terms.

Each of the subjects to be released on a bond of sh.100,000 with a surety of the same amount or an alternative cash bail of sh.20,000, the court ruled.

The case will be mentioned on October 15 while it will be heard on November 22.
