CUTTING of trees to burn charcoal leads to landslides, soil erosion, and desertification, residents of Elgeyo Marakwet county have been told.
“We will not sit down and watch people cutting down trees. The outcome is too high to bear,” Environment executive Samson Kiplagat said yesterday.
He was speaking in an environmental committee meeting in Iten town.
Kiplagat said the county suffers landslides during rainy seasons, killing many people and destroying property.
He said it takes 30-40 years for a tree to mature, so they should be spared.
