Over 1000 female pupils in six primary schools in Kilifi North Sub County, have benefitted from free sanitary towels from County Women Rep. Mrs.Getrude Mbeyu.
Addressing the pupils and leaders during the distribution of the towels, Mbeyu advised them to avoid being lured by boda boda operators into early sex but to instead concentrate on learning to attain best results and pursue further education.
She called for stun action against those found endangering the lives of girls urging chiefs and their assistants who are close to the schools to monitor those involved.
Mbeyu issued four- year scholarships to 39 girls and 11 boys and promised to continue giving scholarships to girls who will attain 350 marks and above in 2019.
I will always support girls’ education so that they can pursue secondary and university levels and be self-sustaining. It is sad to note that girls still lag behind in education due to the various socio-economic challenges, she said.
She said the 450,000 sanitary towels issued Thursday will be followed by another 500,000 in July and that the exercise would continue to ensure the girls learn under a health environment.
Mbeyu cautioned parents who removed their daughters from school to marry them off to old men saying the law would not spare them and urged those organizations dealing with children matters to up their game and bring culprits to book.
Representatives from Plan international and Kesho Kenya organizations who were present pledged to continue collaboration and support to the government.
