Shock and grief gripped Sofia village in Voi sub-county after a dismembered body of a middle-aged man was found lying on the railway tracks on Sunday morning.
Residents suspect that a late night cargo train ran over the victim because several of his body parts were scattered along the railway line.
A second Mombasa-bound train was forced to wait for over two hours as police and villagers walked along the tracks collecting the victim’s body parts from the scene.
Crime scenes detectives were also trying to piece together evidence on whether the victim was murdered elsewhere and body dumped over the tracks, less than fifty meters from Voi-Mombasa road.
Residents said the absence of blood at the scene could mean the body was dumped by unknown people at night. The train then ran over him and dragged his body for a distance of over twenty meters.
A curious onlooker who only identified himself as Mutuku said the railway tracks along Kalolenyi bridge had become notorious dumping site for bodies.
There is need for this bush bordering the tracks to be cleared. Criminals are leaving bodies on tracks to kill evidence, he said.
Other residents claimed the victim was a common face in the region and did odd jobs for people in town. It is suspected he might have been on his way home when he was attacked on Saturday night. Residents called upon the railway police to intensify patrols along the tracks to nab criminals operating in the area.
Confirming the incident, Voi Railways OCS, Gladys Ogoti said the unidentified body had been taken to Moi County Referral
Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem to establish the cause of death.
We are waiting for postmortem results to tell us how the victim died, Ogoti said, adding that police were looking for the deceased’s relatives to come for the body.
