Parts of Kayafungo and Mwanamwinga locations in Kaloleni and Palakumi in Ganze sub counties have been hit by a month long severe water shortage, after the engine of a water pump broke at Maryani near Palakumi trading centre along the Ganze- Mwijo water pipeline in Kilifi County.
Over 12, 000 residents in the three locations have been relying on unsafe water from river Nzovuni and the few pans and dams available for drinking and domestic use.
The affected, who spoke to KNA, said they feared for their health as some of the water they were using has been contaminated after the May-July heavy rains that pounded and flooded the area.
We have been experiencing many cases of malaria and diarrhea and we suspect these diseases are partly being caused by the contaminated water. We are appealing to Kilifi-Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO) to take urgent action and repair the broken pump, said Raphael Mweni who spoke on behalf of the residents.
He said it was the residents’ right to get clean water along with other services stressing that the water crisis has also alongside affected learning in the local schools.
The KIMAWASCO Water Technical Manager, Julius Mwarua admitted there has been delay in water pumping to the region and attributed it to tendering procedures for a new water pump.
He said a new pump has now been acquired for the area and that normal water supply was set to resume by the end of the week.
