Security beefed up in run up to General elections

The government has put in place adequate multi-agency security measures in clash-prone Tana River County in the run up to the August 8 General Elections.

The Tana River County Commissioner (CC), Oningo Ole Sosio said specialised security units had been deployed in the area to ensure peace and security prevail before, during and after the elections.

The government has deployed various security units to deal with any threat to security in the county, he said.

The CC was speaking at a Hola hotel on Monday during a meeting with political, community and religious leaders from Galole constituency.

Recently, police gunned down three suspected Al Shabaab militiamen in Wayu area within Galole constituency.

The three had earlier reportedly shot dead a driver with the local county assembly.

The administrator called on the leaders to ensure peace is maintained between the various communities living in the county.

He particularly warned contestants of various political positions in the county to conduct their campaigns peacefully, warning that those who would breach the electoral code of conduct would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

On the current famine situation ravaging the county, the administrator said the government had enough food to supply to schools to ensure the academic calendar is not disrupted.
