The Turkana County Executive Committee member in charge of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Transport and Public Works, Benson Lokwang has assured residents that the ongoing demolition of buildings on road reserves is meant to open up the town.
Speaking when he led a team of engineers from his office in assessing the recently opened up road reserves, Lokwang said he supported the exercise, saying it was meant for the good of the county.
This exercise is meant for the good of all of us as Lodwar residents. No one is being targeted, he said.
His assurance comes after mixed reactions from the members of the public over the exercise.
Those opposed to the demolitions claim the county government has not given them alternative land to relocate their businesses, while others claim the notice issued were too short.
However, those in support of the demolition say it will open up the two and boost security of the town. It will also make it possible to respond to emergencies at first hand as movement will be fast.
Lokwang also inspected the progress of the road leading to Ekalees Center from Lodwar which is currently being upgraded to Bitumen Standard.
The centre hosts the annual Tobongulore cultural and tourism festival which is set to be held on April 19.
