Residents Protest Against Poor State of Chuka-Kaareni Road Held in Embu

RESIDENTS of Chuka Igambang’ombe blocked the Chuka-Kaareni Road on Monday, protesting its state of disrepair.

Boda boda riders said the dust endangers their health. Matatu operators plying the route said they are forced to hike fares due to the poor state of the road.

The road links Tharaka Nithi county headquarters in Kathwana to Chuka town.

County government officials use Mati Road and go through Embu county to access Kathwana.

The county government last week set aside Sh1 million to upgrade the road.

Chuka Igambang’ombe MP Muthomi Njuki said the county government must account for the Sh308 million set aside to upgrade roads in the previous financial year.

Speaking to the press in Chuka town last week, Roads executive Basilio Gitonga said the blame game over the upgrade of roads has led to their deplorable state.

“The poor road grabs our opportunities to grow our economy,” he said.

Gitonga said tarmacking the road will also help farmers.
