Kisumu Governor, Jack Ranguma on Friday in partnership with Rural Electrification Authority (REA) commissioned eight high mast floodlights at various markets within the county of Kisumu in a project costing 60million shillings.
Speaking after commissioning the floodlights in Kombewa, Akado, Chemelil, Korowe, Rabuor, Huma, Daraja Mbili and Orongo, Ranguma said the initiative is aimed at improving security within the sub-counties and encourage a 24 hour economy.
The governor urged the traders to make use of the floodlights by operating for longer hours.
“The threat of insecurity you used to face due to darkness is now no more. I encourage all of you to make use of these floodlights to conduct your business for longer hours. It is my hope that your incomes will also increase as a result of this”, said Ranguma.
Besides the above flood lighting project, the county government has made other investments in the supply of electricity to business and residential areas with the support of the French Development Bank (AFD), under the Kisumu Urban Project (KUP).
Last year, a total of 23 floodlights across the city were installed at insecurity hotspots in Nanga, Nyalenda, Manyatta, Kondele, Kaloleni, Migosi, Mamboleo, Obunga, Nyawita, Kiboswa, Otonglo and Kibuye.
