Four terror suspects were killed while two of their accomplices may have escaped during a shootout with security officers at Kwachocha in Malindi.
Speaking in office in Mombasa on Wednesday, outgoing County Commissioner, Mr. Nelson Marwa said that during the shootout, the suspects hurled live grenades at the security agents.
“Acting on intelligence, a multi agency security team arrested two terror suspects in Kipini namely Mohammed Abdulrahman Mohammed and Zakaria Mohammed Athumani”, Marwa said.
He said the two suspects led police officers to the house of their accomplices at Kwachocha where arms are kept.
“Upon reaching the house at 2 am today the occupants opened fire and hurled grenades at the security agents who thwarted the attack with four suspects being gunned down while two others escaped with serious injuries,” Marwa said.
The suspects gunned down include Suleiman Awadh, believed to be the group leader, Abdallah Salim Marumu Isa Jabir and Zakaria Mohammed Athumani.
Marwa said police recovered five hand grenades, one browning pistol, laptop 10 mobile phones, cartridges and unused Safaricom and orange sim cards, a map of Malindi to Ijara, eight identity cards, flash disks and a Quran during the operation.
The CC said that the police will continue with security operation in the region until terror activities are stamped out.
He appealed to hospitals to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot injuries from suspicious activities.
“The government is taking a proactive stance in combating terrorism in a bid to improve the country’s security standing in the world”, he said.
