Police detonate bomb found in a farm

Bomb disposal officers from Nyeri County and police in Tharaka-Nithi County have Monday detonated an active bomb found by a farmer who was tilling his land.

Speaking to reporters after the detonation of the bomb, Mr Augustine Mugo said the explosive was found by one of his workers Sunday at Ikorongo village in Ndagani Sub-location of Chuka Igambang’ombe Sub County.

I immediately informed the police who visited my farm to assess the object and confirmed it was a bomb, said Mr Mugo.

Area OCPD Barasa Sayia told media at the scene they were forced to call bomb experts from Nyeri County who detonated the explosive.

Mr. Sayia said the 60mm-high-explosive bomb would destroy any erected structures within a radius of two kilometres.

The weapon could even destroy an entire apartment two kilometres away if it was not handled in time, he noted.

The OCPD said the bomb could be among those used by colonialists during the Mau Mau war.

Mr Charles Mwenda, a resident, said the explosive was the fifth to be discovered in the village by farmers causing fear of tilling their farms.

Some of us have stopped tilling our land because we fear that we might hit such a destructive explosive, said Mr Mwenda.

Police have advised locals to be vigilant and immediately inform administration whenever they find suspicious devices within their homes.
