Police in Iten are holding a scrap metal dealer who was allegedly
found with four sacks of sandalwood packed with scrap metals at Kapsio area in Keiyo North sub county.
The Elgeyo Marakwet county administration police commander Sammy Chandago said they have been suspecting that Richard
Chelimo who is a licensed scrap metal dealer has been illegally transporting the sandalwood.
Chandago said his officers conducted a raid early Friday and found the sandalwood which is one of the endangered species packed
together with the scrap metal within his compound.
“The suspect has been duping the police using the license for scrap metals to transport the rare species until the long hand of the law
caught up with him,” he said.
The AP boss said the police have taken the exhibit to the police awaiting the value of the wood and its specific species
before the suspect is arraigned in court.
Chandago said they were also consulting with authorities in Baringo county to see whether the sandal came from the county as it is found
along Kerio Valley which covers both counties.
Early in 2015, sandalwood worth millions of shillings was intercepted by police in Iten as it was being transported to Eldoret.
