Security agents in Nyando sub-county on Monday intercepted 583 rolls of bhang and arrested two suspects near Ayweyo market on Katito-Kisumu highway.
The two male suspects aged 23 and 17 years were reportedly apprehended after the motorcycle registration number KMDJ 520J they were using to ferry the consignment ran out of fuel.
Nyando OCPD, Mohammed Amin confirmed the 3a.m incident and said a watchman who was guarding one of the nearby premises got suspicious and alerted the area Chief leading to the arrest of the suspects.
“The area Chief, Leonard Abara in collaboration with the local Administration police officers swiftly sprung into action following the tip off and laid an ambush that culminated into the arrest of the suspects, said the OCPD.
The Police boss said the two had disguised themselves as students and packed the illegal drugs with an estimated street value of Sh.30, 000 in a metal box and three other bags apparently to hoodwink law enforcement officers.
He said the suspects are being held at the Ahero Police station and will be arraigned in court today with preliminary investigations indicating the haul was en route to Kisumu from Migori before it was seized by the Police.
The officer lauded the residents for cooperating with the police in thwarting growing cases of criminals whom he noted “are bent on turning the Migori-Kisumu highway into a corridor for transporting illegal substances destined for other parts of the country.”
He put criminals operating in the area on notice after he warned that anyone caught in possession of illegal drugs and substances would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
