Nursery school girl killed, suspect arrested in Murang’a

Greif engulfed residents of Kirembu village in Gitugi division of Murang’a County after the body of a five-year old girl was found dumped in a thicket.

The girl went missing on Wednesday evening but shockingly her grandmother who was living with the minor failed to report to the authorities.

The grandmother reported the case on Friday morning prompting villagers accompanied by area administrators to mount a search only to find the body of the girl dumped in thicket few meters from their home.

Police in the area have arrested a 37-year old man whom school children identified as the one who picked the girl from her school on Wednesday evening.

Confirming the incident, Mathioya Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Jamleck Mbuba said legs and hands of the deceased were folded at back and there was an indication the minor was defiled by her assailant.

Mbuba wondered why the grandmother took long to report the missing child saying she has been put under custody for interrogation. The girl’s mother works in Nairobi.

Children of the academy where the girl was schooling have identified the man who picked the girl on Wednesday evening and security officers have arrested him as investigations are being done before he is arraigned in court, said the deputy commissioner as he condemned the incident.

Speaking elsewhere, Murang’a county commissioner Mr. John Elung’ata decried increased cases of killing of minors in the county.

Within a span of three months, Elung’ata noted four minors aged between five and seven years have been murdered in similar incidences.

I read mischief in all these killings as there is parent negligence. It’s shocking to see a 5 year child not being escorted to and from school by a parent or guardian! posed Elung’ata.

A week ago, five-year old child was killed and his eyes and tongue removed and the body dumped along a river in parts of Gatanga Sub County.

Early in the month of June, a standard three girl was also abducted on her way home from school only for her body to be found dumped half a kilometer from her home in Muthithi area of Kigumo Sub County.

Elung’ata said as police hunt for assailants, parents should always make sure they know whereabouts of their children.
