A man who wedded recently died while his wife was critically injured after being struck by lightning on Friday evening at Magombani village, Matuga Sub-County in Kwale County.
The deceased identified as Ngao Mwero, 30, was accompanied by his wife, Bahati Mwero, when tragedy struck on their way home from their farm. The two are said to have wedded recently and had no children
County Commissioner Mr. Karuku Ngumo confirmed the incident, saying the newly wedded couple was sheltering under tree following a heavy down pour at around 4pm before they were hit by the lighting.
Mr. Ngumo said the man died instantly while the wife sustained serious hand and head injuries.
The wife was critically injured since she was hit on her head and is undergoing treatment at the Kwale Sub-County Hospital, said Mr. Ngumo.
According to him, neighbors heard a deafening thunder before the unfortunate incident and on rushing to the scene they found the man already dead and the wife lying next to the body unconscious.
Locals said besides farming, the deceased was also engaged in coffee selling business at Magombani shopping centre.
A weather alert from the Meteorological Department indicates Kwale as among 40 counties to be affected by heavy rains.
The Department also warns people in lightning prone areas against sheltering under trees or next to grilled windows in the houses.
