The Mumias Sugar Company’s ethanol plant has resumed production after several months of dormancy.
Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who oversaw the commissioning of the plant on Wednesday said raw materials which included bagasse and molasses would be sourced from Butali Mills and Busia Sugar Company.
The county head said the sugar miller, which is under a Kenya Commercial Bank-appointed receiver manager, would resume crushing cane by the end of the year.
My administration is mobilizing the residents to plant sugarcane through the community area administrators so that we have adequate raw materials once the factory resumes crushing, he stated on Wednesday while commissioning the plant.
He disclosed that they have included a Sugarcane Development Fund in the supplementary budget to facilitate the farmers to grow cane.
The KCB appointed a receiver manager September last year after the factory went under with its Sh20 billion in debt.
