Mother to Murang’a women rep killed in road accident

The Mother to Murang’a County women representative, Sabina Chege died on Thursday after she was involved in a grisly road accident.

Susan Wairimu Chege, 68, who was travelling with her husband died on spot after their car collided with another vehicle head on at Githumu area along Thika-Kangari road on Thursday at around 7.30pm.

Her husband Chege Mutema who was driving the car was left nursing critical injuries and was rushed to Agha Khan Hospital in Nairobi for specialized treatment.

Confirming the incident, Murang’a County Police Commander, Naomi Ichami said the MP’s parents were heading to Kangari when they collided with a Sacco van which was heading towards Thika.

She said Mutema sustained head and leg injuries and was transferred to the city hospital after receiving first aid at the Githumu mission hospital.

The van belonging to Unitas Sacco had six passengers, four of whom were seriously injured and were also transferred to Agha Khan hospital after receiving first aid.

The driver of the Sacco van and one of his passengers received medical attention at Githumu hospital and were discharged, as the other four were taken for further treatment together with Mutema, added Ichami.

The police commander said investigations had been launched to establish the cause of the accident, adding that it occurred as the two drivers were negotiating a corner.

Preliminary investigations show that one of the drivers used the wrong lane thus causing the mishap, but we are going to establish the truth, she said.

The body was taken to Githumu Hospital mortuary waiting for postmortem, while the wreckage of the two vehicles were towed to Githumu police station.

Meanwhile, leaders from Murang’a led by the county governor Mwangi wa Iria have sent condolences to the family of Chege, saying they have lost a great member of the community.

In his message, Mwangi also wished the survivors quick recovery, while cautioning drivers to be extra careful especially when driving at night.
