NAIROBI, Kenya’s Nicholas Bett will be unable to defend his 400 metres hurdles world title at the IAAF World Championships in London next month after suffering a leg injury.
Bett, who was in good shape earlier in the season while preparing to to defend the gold he worn in Beijing in 2015, suffered his injury before the first event of this year’s IAAF Diamond League series.
Bett’s first outing at national level was in 2010 and a year later made his breakthrough nationally at senior level with a run of 50.39 seconds to finish third at the Kenyan Athletics Championships. The 27 year old missed most of the 2012 season but returned in 2013 with a runner-up finish at the national championships.
He qualified for the 2014 Commonwealth Games but failed to make the final.
He was one of Kenya’s gold medal hopes at the 2017 IAAF World Athletics Championships to be held in London from Aug 5 to 13. The Kenyan athletics team was picked last month after the national trials.
