The government cash transfer program initiative to cushion families ravaged by famine is being abused by some men in Kwale County.
The irresponsible men abandon their families and waste the money on alcohol and women instead of buying food, the County Steering Committee, was told on Thursday.
By December last year, the government relief efforts had seen over 34,000 vulnerable households in the region receive the cash handouts under the Chakula Kwa Jamii Program.
But it has now emerged that the money is not used for the single purpose of directly buying food with the committee being told that many men headed families were famished despite the government monthly stipend of Sh2300.
The Kwale County Commissioner (CC), Karuku Mbuku who chaired the meeting advised the beneficiaries to use the money properly in appreciation of the government’s well-intentioned intervention.
The households were selected from the bulk of vulnerable groups that could not support themselves following prolonged drought and it is only reasonable to put the cash in good use, said Mr. Mbuku.
The government is implementing this project in 13 counties whereby households in arid and semi arid areas were each receiving Sh.3, 000 and Sh.2, 300 respectively.
The government spent Sh.1.8billion on the project which targets 1.6 million people in the affected counties.
