Massive nets distribution to control malaria

Residents of Lugari sub-county in Kakamega County are to receive mosquito nets worth S35 Million.

Medical Officer of health Dr. Isaiah Walela said the nets will be distributed to over 112, 000 residents in the area between Friday and Sunday.

The MOH said the nets will enhance prevention of malaria among the populace adding ,we count one net for every two people, but if a household has three people, then we shall give them two nets, explained Walela.

Dr. Walela, however, regretted that some people had in the past used them as either poultry runs or to prevent birds from straying to their kitchen gardens while others used them for fishing in ponds and nearby streams.

He underscored the need of putting the nets to proper use noting that malaria was a killer disease, claiming over 2 million lives annually in the world and 6,700 in the county.

Addressing stakeholders in the health sector at a hotel in Lumakanda shopping centre Wednesday, the MOH said identity cards will be used when distributing the nets.

According to him, a memo detailing how the nets should be used shall be issued adding that 68 centres including primary schools and health facilities had been identified in the area for the issuance.
