Marsabit registers success in Digital Literacy Program

The Government has so far managed to operationalize the Digital Literacy Program (DLP) in virtually all primary schools in Marsabit County with 73 per cent of them up and running.

The Government has connected all the 173 public primary schools across the county to electricity out of which 125 have been installed with the tablets.

The ICT Technical Officer DLP, Idris Aden said the programme was a flagship project for the Government under the Vision 2030 aimed at making Kenya an ICT knowledge based economy.

Speaking on Friday during the official launch of the program for 34 primary schools in Marsabit Central Sub-county held at S.K.M Primary School in which 1, 899 pupils received the tablets, Aden said devices for children with hearing and vision impairment were being developed.

The Technical Officer said that the program was progressing well across the country with 17, 000 schools out of 23, 000 now installed with the devices.

It is the aim of the government to install devices in all the schools by the end of this month. The remaining 46 primary schools in Marsabit will receive their gadgets in due course, he assured.

Presiding over the ceremony, Marsabit County Commissioner (CC), Magu Mutindika noted that the programme had succeeded despite facing many challenges, including legal handles.

Mutindika said DLP was essentially meant to prepare Kenyan children for the 21st Century skills that were needed in the globally competitive environment and asked the community to be supportive.

The CC added that DLP would create a platform from which all pupils across the country would be learning irrespective of their locality to enhance equity.

According to the local TSC Director David Mukui, ICT skills which have been introduced in all schools with the training of three teachers from every institution would be enhanced as the country shifts from ‘chalk and talk’ teaching approach to digital literacy.

Mukui called for hastening of the supply of the learners’ digital devices to the remaining schools in order to ensure some pupils do not lag behind.

The County Director disclosed that internal training in ICT skills for teachers by the TSC was on course, adding that children with special needs have not been left behind in the programme.

Mukui underlined the importance of the programme which he said was not so much about supply of devices but rather quality digital content as the country.

He lauded the collaborative approach in which the programme was being implemented where all stakeholders including the Ministries of Education, ICT, Rural Electrification Authority among other partners to actualize the programme.

The Government project is a social pillar in the Vision 2030 development plan which has seen the country experience a transformative effect with all public primary schools connected to electricity hence enabling communities in rural parts of the country to be connected as well.

The recruitment of ICT officers who are stationed in every County has created jobs for the youth.
