Mandera Leaders Appeal for calm after Clan Related Killings

Leaders from the feuding clans in Mandera County have appealed to the affected communities to refrain from engaging in retaliatory attacks county after ten members of a family were killed in the latest flare up.

Security agencies who have since attempted to arbitrate a peace deal to ease mounting tension have called for a cease fire between the warring Clan after militias believed to be from the Degodia clan last Tuesday ambushed a remote village in Banisa Sub County killing the ten.

The killings happened in Dumaal village Malkamari ward in Banisa Sub County in Mandera where five females, a minor and four men were shot dead.

Local leaders led by Banisa MP Kullow Maalim condemned the deaths and asked residents not to retaliate.

He however, without elaborating, said the killings were politically instigated and called on the government to expeditiously bring the killers to justice.

Mandera County Commissioner Onesmus Kyatha said the government would take stern action on the killers and perpetrators of the heinous act.

Kyatha said the government has apprehended suspects who were helping in investigations to unravel people behind the killings.

The region has enjoyed peace since 2016 when residents agreed to coexist peacefully after a series of inter clan clashes pitting the Garre and Degodia.

The clashes which were common after the advent of devolution left several people dead, property destroyed and population displaced.
