Said who sells cassava to support his wife and two children in Tana River County, says he has not been able to meet the hospital bills but was fortunate to have been accepted at the health facility with the little funds his family had been able to raise.

According to the hospital’s Assistant Administrator,Rashid Hashim, the hospital felt there was urgent need to help the patient so as to be able save his life.

Kidney dialysis which is only available at the facility in the entire Malindi Sub County costs shs. 4,000 and shs. 7,500 per session for patients with and without NHIF membership respectively.

Hashim stated that the hospital was able to meet half of the cost as Said was not registered on the medical scheme, meaning he was to pay shs. 3,000 for the sessions.

According to kidney specialist, Prof. Mohamed Abdalla Siban, the patient requires to undergo three kidney dialysis sessions in a week as both of his kidneys had failed while they were hoping to get a donor so that a kidney transplant would be done to save the man’s life.

“At the moment we are expecting to start his dialysis session in the course of the day as we wait to get a match for his kidney so that a transplant can be done as soon as possible. He will have to undergo several sessions as preparations are being done to also establish if the donor is a good match,” Prof. Abdalla stated.

Currently, Tawfiq Hospital has a total of 12 patients undergoing dialysis. Depending on the severity of the patient’s condition, a patient is required to undergo dialysis at least twice or thrice on a weekly basis until he manages to acquire a matching kidney donor.

Iddi has been suffering from blood pressure and diabetes for the past six years until he was recently diagnosed with kidney failure.

“I am in so much pain, I cry like a small boy”, said Iddi from his hospital bed.
