Man kills brother, presents self to police

A 30 year old man Saturday stabbed his elder brother to death as he tried to rescue their younger brother who were fighting over a long standing family land and property dispute in Madogo, Tana River County.

It all started on Thursday when the deceased Abakar Tilow called his two brothers and their mother with strict instruction that all the tenants in his 7 rooms rental houses vacate before he arrives from Mombasa where he works as a watchman with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA). The rental houses are built on a family plot left to them by their deceased father

On arrival, the deceased questioned why the owner of kiosk next to their plot had not vacated alongside the tenants. A brother requested that he goes and look for the shop owner so that she removes her stock noting that ‘it was not part of the instructions he had issued on phone’.

But this further angered the deceased who started pulling down the door to the kiosk and throwing out the shop’s stock.

His younger brother, Ramah Tilow tried to stop him but he hit him with a piece of timber in the head sending him to the ground. He sustained head injuries.

Sensing danger the assailant’s other brother Isaac Tilow drew his knife and stabbed the deceased twice killing him. He then presented himself to Madogo police station.

He was immediately arrested and transferred to Garissa police station. He will appear in court on Monday.

The deceased was buried Sunday in accordance with Muslim burial rites at one of the Muslim cemeteries in Madogo after a postmortem. Hundreds of shocked friends, relatives and residents attended the burial.

A friend and neighbour to the family Daudi Ali Loka told KNA on phone that the three brothers have had long standing family feuds over the plot and property since their father passed on.

We (neighbours) tried several times without success to reconcile. I personally stayed with the three brothers and their mother one time past midnight to do the same but it wasn’t possible, Loka said.

Sometime when they quarreled nobody dared go near the compound. It’s unfortunate that it had to end this way, he added.

Loka said the deceased used to complain that his two brothers were lazy and contributed nothing towards the development of the family plot. The deceased has left behind a widow and one child.
