A man assaulted by Legio Maria members over claims that he was the source of troubles at his home in Koyamo village Homabay County has died.
The man identified as Charles Oduk Omwaye, 64, died Sunday at RAM Hospital in Kisii after being transferred from Rachuonyo Level Four Hospitals where he was rushed on Thursday last week when the assault occurred.
Area OCPD, Patrick Onsando, said six people were arrested in connection with the incident among them the wife of the old man who had invited the worshipers for the prayer session over what they claim as undisclosed social problems in the home.
The Officer said the man had claimed they had been having problems with his second wife after she changed from being catholic a year ago and embraced Legio Maria doctrines
The worshippers said to be from Dol Kodera and Opok in Rachuonyo South Sub-county Legio Maria churches had gone to Omwayes home late evening and found the old man already retired to bed but pressed on with the prayers in the presence of his wife and children.
He said Omwaye was beaten by the worshippers when he refused to join them in the prayer session as he did not share their faith, himself being a Catholic
According to eyewitnesses, the High Priest in the Church said the ‘holy spirit ‘has revealed that the old man, already asleep, was the source of the problem in the family and needed to join them in prayer.
The eyewitness further said that the priest shouted and chanted that the ‘holy spirit’ has given a second instruction that the old man should be taken out of bed and beaten for not participating in the prayers, upon which all the members turned to the man beating him until he was unconscious.
