Man damps wife over a child with disability

A man in Trans Nzoia County has allegedly dumped his wife for having a child with disability.

A distraught Sarah Wanjiku 37 was forced to leave her matrimonial home to seek accommodation at a friend’s house in Simatwet area of Moi’s bridge after her husband of 9 years jilted her.

According to Wanjiku she opted to move out of her matrimonial home after her husband told her to leave with the child to an unknown place.

He had asked me to either take the child to an unknown place or leave his home, she said.

She however, disclosed that she got the disabled child out of wedlock and when she married her husband Charles Kuria, 9 years ago, he accepted to take in the child.

Wanjiku who has two other children with Kuria appealed to well-wishers to assist on the upkeep of the children.

The other children are 12 and 8 years old and still need her parental support.

She told KNA that she got pregnant while still at school 16 years ago and gave birth to a normal child in hospital who later developed complications after six months and became disabled.

She pointed out that the boy who is supposed to be in school is at home as he cannot walk and must be carried around. The husband, Wanjiku said sold everything including land and abandoned them.

I now depend on friends and well-wishers to survive, she said.

Wanjiku was speaking after registering her 16 year old boy with National Council of Persons with Disability (NCPWD).

She hopes the organization will help her get assistive devices.

The Director of Joining Hands for a Better Tomorrow (JOHABETO) Non-Governmental Organization, Martin Shikuku said the child needs medication and proper care so that the mother can be free to raise her family.

He urged various stakeholders to assist in finding a solution that can enable the child get medication and attend school. The husband could however, not be traced to give his side of the story
