Male Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) hopefuls who turned up for a recruitment exercise at the Isiolo stadium got a rude shock when they learnt that the activity was a preserve for female candidates.
Hundreds of young men from the division had turned out to try their luck in the recruitment exercise but were turned away with information that no male slot was reserved for Isiolo town and its suburbs.
Reacting to complaints from the disappointed youth, officer in charge of the exercise, Lt. Col. Samuel Mayenga said instructions from the Department of Defence (DOD) headquarters in Nairobi were that only females had some slots since none was currently serving in the KDF.
We will only recruit female candidates from Central Division because statistics at the DOD indicate that no female from the division is currently serving in the Kenya Defence Forces.
However, the exercise was free and fair and no one was required to pay any money, said Mayenga.
There were no irregularities experienced during the exercise that was free and fair with only those who met the minimum academic qualifications, physical fitness and medical requirements being recruited, he said.
But the Lt. Colonel refused to divulge the number of recruits to the media citing security reasons.
The minimum academic qualification is a D plain but with the military, physical fitness and medical examinations are very vital to ensure the recruits will be equal to the task attached to the job. Many who were turned away were underweight and a few with missing teeth, said the recruitment boss.
