Machakos Teachers Training College was on Tuesday closed indefinitely after tension rose following the announcement of fees increase.
The decision to close down the institution was arrived at following a crisis meeting between the board of management and the student council leadership.
Members who requested anonymity said the decision was taken to avert an eminent riot and destruction of property by the irate students following the announcement.
Students lamented that they were required to pay almost Shs.160, 000 up from the Shs. 90,000 they have been paying.
They claimed that such a move would inconvenience their parents and deny some of them who cannot afford the opportunity to complete their studies.
They however, welcomed the closure, saying it will give them time to cool down and consult with their parents while the institution’s leadership considers how to solve the impasse.
“As students we welcome the closure decision since it was taken for the good of all us”, said Michael Njoroge, who is also the Secretary General of the students’ council.
He added that students were generally peaceful and did not engage in any mischief following the annoying announcement.
Efforts to get a comment from the Principal, Lucy Mugambi or the Machakos County Director of Education, Chacha Mwita were futile as calls to their phones went unanswered.
