Fishermen in Lake Baringo have been warned against engaging in fishing activities beyond afternoon when tides begin to be high in the lake.
Lake Baringo community Water Rescue International (WARESI), a local CBO chair, Joshua Chepsergon warned fishermen, tourist and local residents to be extra cautious when using the lake after 2pm, when waves are very strong and cause turbulence to boats.
Chepsergon who spoke to the press at Kabarnet town, cited an incident which occurred Friday last week, where a boat used by fishermen was broken into and fish worth over Sh. 20,000 was poured back to the lake.
In the 3pm incident, the fishermen aboard the ill-fated boat survived by a whisker after they managed to jump off and swim into the shores of the lake since they had approached the shores.
From the one hour incident we cannot be sure that it can never happen in the future hence, we need to be very cautious when we are engaging in various activities within the expansive lake, said Chepsergon.
