Laikipia County government has disbursed Sh.9.7 million to various Savings and Credit Cooperatives in the area.
While disbursing the cash to 19 Agricultural based cooperative societies, Trade and Cooperatives Executive Member, Biwott Tirop said that the cash would create jobs through value addition of agricultural products.
Biwott urged residents to join Saccos in order to benefit from government funds since they can only be channeled through the cooperatives.
He said that money given inform of loans was repayable within two years at an interest of five per cent.
Most of the Saccos that got the money were engaged in Dairy and Horticulture Farming and hoped to value-add their products in order fetch more in the market.
They got cheques of amounts ranging from Sh.200, 000 to half a million.
The County Director of Cooperatives, Rosemary Ngugi said that her department was seeking to have the kitty increased by the Laikipia government so as to reach more cooperatives and uplift their members.
Ngugi also urged area residents to join cooperative societies and enjoy the benefits of pool savings and access to cheap loans, adding that currently only 52,000 residents were members of various cooperatives.
